"Between April 1956 and June 1958, approximately 940 MK36s of all mods were manufactured. The Mods0 and 1 entered the stockpile in 1956 and the Mod2 in 1958. These warheads were retired between August 1961 and January 1962; retirement of the MK36s reduced total U.S. stockpile megatonnage by almost 50%, from 19,000 MT to 10,000 MT. (The MK36 programs were canceled in January 1959 in favor of the MK41.)
MK36 variants included the MK36Y1 Mod0 through MK36Y1 Mod2, and MK36Y2
Mods0 and 1. The MK36 was 58 1/2" in diameter, 12 1/2' long, and
weighed 17,500 lbs. (12,000 lbs. of this was the casing weight). Tail
fins spanned 78". The Class "B" bomb was parachute
retarded and could be fused for either air or surface burst. Yield
was on the order of ten megatons." *
